
Joe Wallenstein oversees and administers all aspects of filming by the more than 900 students making over 2000 films each year at the USC School of Cinematic Arts. He also oversees the staff and the daily operations of the Student Production Office. He coordinates with Film L.A., the city's filming permits office and coordinates all aspects of vendor relations. His tri-annual safety seminars are a unique, and highly sought after, facet of cinematic arts education.
Prior to his role as start-up producer of the hit CW series, 7th Heaven, Wallenstein was the first producer, as well a writer and director of multiple episodes of the long running hit series, Knots Landing (1979-1983), and supervising producer of Jake and the Fatman, in Hawaii (1987-1989.) In addition The Clinic, shot in New York City. He has produced numerous television movies, pilots and mini-series.
Throughout his more than 30 years in the industry, Wallenstein has been an assistant director, production manager, associate producer and producer. He is a Director member of the Directors Guild as well as a member of the Writers Guild of America.
He is expert in all aspects of physical production, scheduling, budgeting, location filming, stage work, union and non-union shows. He has worked in Europe, Mexico, Canada and most of the major cities of the United States.

JOE WALLENSTEIN - BIO
Joe Wallenstein was born in Brooklyn, New York, the son of a Social Worker and an Interior Designer. He attended New York University where he majored in film and television production. He earned a Bachelor of Business Science Degree in “Motion Picture, Television and Radio, Production and Direction.”
He began his career as a Freelance Production Assistant and worked on the New York portions of such films as “Mister Buddwing starring James Garner and “Where Were You When the Lights Went Out?” headlined by Doris Day, Frank Sinatra and Robert Morse.
Mr. Wallenstein joined the Director’s Guild of America as a Second Assistant Director in October of 1968. He worked on hundreds of commercials.
He worked as a Second, Second Assistant Director on major portions of “The Godfather” when it filmed on Staten Island and New York City. Some of his other early credits include “For Love of Ivy,” starring Sidney Poitier, Nancy Marchand and Carol O’Conner, “Nicky’s World” starring John Cassavettes and “Paper Lion” in Boca Raton, Florida, starring Alan Alda and Lauren Hutton.
Prior to his moving up in the ranks, he also worked on the original “Paper Chase” with John Housman and Lindsey Wagner. He worked on portions of “Up the Sandbox, “Lovers and Other Strangers” and Garson Kanen’s “One With the Fuzz,” starring Red Buttons.
He worked on the pilots of “The Snoop Sisters” starring Helen Hayes, Mildred Natwick and Art Carney and “McCloud,” starring Dennis Weaver.
As a First Assistant Director, Mr. Wallenstein worked on the television series, “Madigan,” starring Richard Widmark that shot in Harlem and Spanish Harlem of New York City.
Mr. Wallenstein worked for internationally renowned Photojournalist and Director, Gordon Parks on his action, police drama “Supercops.” It filmed in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn.
In 1975, Mr. Wallenstein married and moved to California. There, he was an alternating First Assistant Director on the TV series, “Blue Knight” starring George Kennedy. He was the First Assistant Director of the Paramount picture titled, “American Hot Wax,” about the payola scandals and the life of rock and roll disc jockey, Alan Freed. The picture starred Tim McIntyre and Lorraine Newman and had musical appearances from Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Dion-and-the-Belmonts, Screamin,’ Jay Hawkins and Jay and the Americans.
He was the American, Assistant Director of a television movie titled, “Desperate Women” that shot in Mexico and starred Dan Haggerty, Susan Saint James, Ann Dusenberry and Ronnie Kramer.
Mr. Wallenstein moved up to Production Manager and oversaw numerous television series and pilots.
In 1979, Mr. Wallenstein Production Managed and Associate Produced the pilot for “Knots Landing.” When the pilot sold, he became its first Producer. He produced the first four years of the show. He also wrote and directed numerous episodes.
Mr. Wallenstein became a member of the Writer’s Guild of America as well as a member of the Television Academy of Arts and Sciences.
He produced many made-for-television movies, some of which were: “Turn Back the Clock” starring Connie Selleca, “The Story Lady” starring Jessica Tandy and a television remake of “Three Coins in the Fountain,” titled “Coins in the Fountain. It was for CBS, shot in Rome, Italy and Luxembourg and starred Loni Andersen, Stephanie Kramer and Shanna Reed.
He Produced the CBS mini-series, “Dallas: the Early Years.”
In addition, he produced a film for NBC called, “Independence” for which he won the Cowboy Hall of Fame award for Best Picture of the Year.
